London Fashion Week | Autumn / Winter 2019 Tolu Coker
Winning the Fashion Scout AW19 Merit Award is unisex fashion brand Tolu Coker. The Nigerian, London based designer uses her art form, to serve as a creative outlet for the youthful expression of political reform through inclusivity, diversity and social responsibility. Her work is a fusion of generational experiences, as she aims to showcase her identity by embracing dual heritage and cultures.
The Tolu Coker show opened with the viewing of video archives from her father’s diary. We the audience, were transported back in time to the 90’s, to when Tolu and her siblings were small children being entertained by their Father. It’s from these very archives, Tolu found inspiration to create some of the pieces within this incredible collection. The 90’s theme continued as the models bopped and danced along the catwalk, with the most infectious energy. Soundtracked by Notorious B.I.G, the most authentic nostalgia was in the air as we previewed the most refreshing collection of London Fashion Week AW19.
With a brand ethos that embodies identity, craftsmanship and advance technology, the collection showcases a strong consciousness for sustainability. With reworked denims, recycled leathers and reused plastic, the brand is a catalyst for acceptance and freedom. This was a showcase of true black culture, a throwback to it’s bold fashion, unapologetic use of colour, big hair styles, tribal headpieces, jewellery and staple accessories such as a bike and a boombox. By far my favourite fashion show in a long time, one that will never be forgotten and I’m super keen to see future collections from this emerging but outstanding brand.
