Cherrie - Araweelo [Album]
This is why music is so magical... If you can listen to a song or in this case, an entire album in a different language and feel a genuine connection or sense of emotion, hand's down it's a body of outstanding work. Swedish singer-songwriter Cherrie is an incredible talent and totally impressing music lovers around the globe. With songs in Swedish, it's amazing how effortlessly Cherrie's music is transpiring internationally, with fans singing along to words they can't actually understand. I am one of those fan's and I'm proud to admit it.
As a Somali-Swedish girl, growing up in Stockholm, life wasn't the easiest. But it's the real life challenges that Cherrie decided to sing about, making her a notable spokesperson for her community. 'Araweelo' is the singer-songwriters second album, released on her own same titled independent record label. Araweelo is the name of an ancient Somali queen, a ruler of many if not all of the Somali territories, and she fought for female empowerment.
'Araweelo' the album is beautiful. A stunning and soul-stirring offering of R&B, with undertones of both Swedish and Somali sounds. The R&B/hip hop scene within Stockholm is bursting out of the city, and Cherrie is definitely one to keep your eye on. Check out the album for 'Araweelo' on Spotify and take a peep at the video, for one of my favourite songs from the record, 'Det Slår Mig Ibland,' which translates in English as 'It Strikes Me Sometimes' and also 'Känns Som 05,' translating in English as 'Feels Like 05.'
