L E M F R E C K - Closer feat. Kiddus [Audio]
Set to release his powerful new EP The Pursuit, we share rapper L E M F R E C K’s latest track ‘Closer’ featuring Kiddus, where he investigates how toxic masculinity has a devastating impact on the mental health of men going through a breakup.
In the Newport rapper’s own words, he shares:
“Closer is about being around loads of people but still feeling lonely. It forced me to a dark place, and without being able to afford therapy I wrote this out of desperation. I knew I needed to talk to someone but didn't know who.”
Recorded in L E M F R E C K’s bedroom, the track has a fairly simple yet brutally melancholic beat that ends with a heartfelt testimony about how disorienting it is when you don’t know how to talk about your feelings. Wholesome and heart-warming, particularly in hip hop which is known for its alpha-male personas and bravado rather than vulnerability.
The somewhat cryptic lyrics are a further sign of how trailblazing L E M F R E C K’s work is; after all, it is difficult to be the first one to articulate a new idea. ‘Closer’ is certainly up to the pioneering task of creating hip-hop that is more virile than ever whilst detaching itself from expired tropes of toxic masculinity.
The Pursuit EP will be released this week on 29 October, in the meantime enjoy ‘Closer’ featuring Kiddus below:
