Joy Crookes - Skin [Video]
Joy Crookes releases the video for her touching single ‘Skin’, alongside her debut album announcement with the same name. With a string of impressive introspective and musically intricate singles already under her belt, Joy asserts herself as one of the strongest voices to come out of South London’s pop/neo-soul scene.
The single ‘Skin’ evokes the purest of emotions as it shares a powerful message. A piano ballad that leaves Crookes soulful vocals to take centre stage, the inspiring lyrics offer a warm reflective notion of life-affirming thoughts.
“What if you decide that you don't wanna wake up too? // I don't know what I'd do // Cause I've built my life around you // Don't you know the skin that you're given was made to be lived in? // You've got a life // You've got a life worth living”
The visuals, directed by Nono Ayuso, tackle the difficult subject matter in a raw intimate way to capture the story being told. Joy can be seen on a bed beside a friend who mostly lies down out of shot. The bed floats through the streets of London unseen to the passers by, perhaps a symbol of how we can often feel alone when we go through dark periods. In a statement about the video, Joy shared:
“The song is about someone very close to me who thought life wasn’t worth living during a dark time. When it came to the video, it felt necessary to include that person in it. I asked him sincerely and I was incredibly grateful when he chose to participate. The making of the video created an ownership and healing of that difficult time we both lived through."
‘Skin’ the album is due out on October 15 via Insanity Records. You can view the beautifully shot visuals below:
