Chinwe - Numb [Audio]
‘Numb’ is the newest release from East London singer-songwriter and producer Chinwe. With the power to engulf the listener in the rich, smooth yet delicate depth the song holds, this release is a testament to the maturity and drive of a relatively new artist.
Taken from her debut EP ‘Scar Tissue’, ‘Numb’ is a soulful song about dealing with impending pressures from partners, friends and society and how we overcome and deal with them. “Not everyone wants what’s best for you, but we all think we know what’s best,” shares Chinwe, speaking on the track’s theme. “If you take everyone else’s advice instead of staying true to yourself it can lead you into a really dark place.”
Chinwe’s husky yet soothing voice provides a comfort amongst gentle guitar strokes and simplistic production. Adopting influences from an eclectic range of music, she creates a sound that is both familiar and original with jazz-filled rhythms of Nina Simone paired with contemporary music stylings of Portishead. Embracing the DIY approach after experimenting with different sounds, Chinwe’s EP shares an intimacy and tenderness that invites the listener to find comfort and consolidation in shared emotions and reflections.
“Writing was really therapeutic for me and my own attempt at coping with feeling so out of control in ways I had never experienced before,” Chinwe shared. “It’s crazy that even in the strangest, most isolated times, there are still so many pockets of love and loss, so I tried to write about them as best as I could on the EP.
