Joya Mooi - Remember [Video]

Blending soul and alternative R&B is Dutch-South African singer-songwriter Joya Mooi with brand new dreamy single ‘Remember’. Reminiscent of free spirits like Solange and Erykah Badu, Joya Mooi carries herself with elegance and sophistication. ‘Remember’ sees her reflect on the words of wisdom shared decades before us.

Despite the contemplative imagery in the lyrics, the juxtaposition in the track is revealed with the hazy, electronic-inspired soundscape provided by her frequent collaborators, Sim Fane and SIROJ. Of the track, Joya said, “When I was writing ‘Remember’ I was thinking a lot about the reckoning that a lot of thinkers, writers go through with their recipients. Thoughts that seemed revolutionary in the past, were hardly actually listened to, and are now part of our collective memory, part of our IG quotes and referred to in pop culture. I’m intrigued by how works are received, how much of our current time dictates to what extent we can listen.”

An artist with evidently thoughtful lyricism, Joya Mooi’s music has garnered support from the likes of BBC Radio 1Xtra, Rinse FM and Dutch Radio station 3FM. The visuals for the track were directed by Bob Sizoo and follows Joya in a peaceful coastal setting within Rotterdam’s Maasvlakte, before her body is duplicated as she explores geometric installation.
