Poppy Ajudha - London's Burning [Video]
Delivering a powerful social message on the injustice within the current British immigration situation is London’s Poppy Ajudha. ‘London’s Burning’ is a track steeped in emotion and frustration as she gently captures the widespread outrage towards the government response to those looking for a better life in the UK.
The track has a hypnotic appeal, with striking arrangements and immersive stereo soundscapes. There’s a real sense of imminent danger, a warning of the dark, inhumane path we are being led down. Lyrically ‘London’s Burning’ delves into the distressing topic with a poetic lightness, with the bridge:
“Little island thinks that it's a globe // Shuts its doors // It Implodes // Youth uprising // We don’t want to go // If you shut your doors.”
Explaining her commentary on the track Poppy said, “I wrote this song on the legacy of colonialism and the irony that even when we have taken almost everything from most of the globe, ruining countries and communities throughout history to build our own, we are still so quick to close our doors to those in need, even when it is us who have played the biggest roles in destabilising the countries they came from. It’s also a nod to the youth movements desperately trying to change minds and break down stereotypes to create a fairer and more compassionate world.”
Alongside the release of the song comes the equally mesmerising visual, directed by Stone and Spear, starring Poppy herself. The raw shots mirror the track's upbeat yet chilling atmosphere, with strobe lighting and Poppy’s burning red coat created by up-and-coming designer Sam Macer.
‘London’s Burning’ will appear on Poppy’s highly anticipated debut album ‘The Power In Us’ which is set for release on March 11 2022.
