Sola - You Don't Have To Say [Video]

Channelling her collective influences on a new spell-binding offering is London vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Sola. ‘You Don’t Have To Say’ hears Sola’s rich, Nina Simone-like vocals reincarnated amongst ominous, immersive soundscapes similar to the likes of Portishead and Massive Attack.

“‘You Don’t Have To Say’ explores how to move forward from the past while also reflecting on the bittersweet feelings that memories can often provide,” states Sola in a statement about the track. Its progression carries a sense of danger, with Sola soaring above the throbbing bassline and synths. All carefully curated with an acute attention to how the clashing elements resonate with listeners, Sola explains, “the juxtaposition in the bassline and synths makes you feel a little uncomfortable which is something I love to capture in my music.”

Alongside the single comes visuals directed by Nicolee Tsin. With the same menacing energy the video sees Sola contained within a bubble, a visual representation of her being trapped inside her past and looking ahead through a clear barrier. With a black backdrop Sola is lit by deep vivid colours, making the three-minute video a captivating masterpiece.

Her latest EP ‘Mani Wata’ showcased her multifaceted musical upbringing perfectly, and this release is just a taste of what’s to come as she sets out to broaden her musical horizons even further.
