MXXWLL - Light Turn Green feat. John Givez, Rae Khalil & Carrtoons [Video]
Earlier this month, Sydney-born producer MXXWLL announced the release of his forthcoming debut album ‘Sheeesh’ with his new single and video ‘Light Turn Green,’ featuring LA’s John Givez, rapper Rae Khalil who appeared on last year’s Netflix series Rhythm + Flow and producer Carrtoons.
Delivering a nostalgic hip hop and neo-soul offering, the track was created with the intention to narrate a car trip / day in the life type story. MXXWLL had just arrived in LA, he hit up John Givez and by night, the track was in motion. Carrtoons is responsible for the infectious bass line, a creation he had made having purchased a recent sound pack by MXXWLL himself. “We thought it was so fire that we straight away asked if we could flip it for the track,” shares MXXWLL. “We didn’t know each other at the time, but it was just one of those perfect timing things.” The next day Rae Khalil and her manager came over for a meeting with MXXWLL’s manager however, wasting no time at all, Khalil ended up in the studio to record the hook for the song. “I low-key love that the song follows the story of one day and the track also got made in one day,” MXXWLL shares.
Directed by Sergey and Danielle of Seventy Two Films, the official music video was shot in LA and around the Crenshaw / View Park area. In keeping with the tracks theme, we see John Givez cruising around in a white vintage vehicle, as we watch his ‘day in the car’ story unfold.
MXXWLL’s forthcoming album ‘Sheeesh’ will be released on May 22 2020. The 17-track project hosts an exciting list of features, with the likes of Inglewood based singer-songwriter SiR, Melbourne neo-soul singer Kaiit, platinum selling artist Aloe Blacc and Oakland rapper Guapdad 4000.
