Wale celebrates black love and activism in his newly released video for ‘Black Bonnie,’ as actress Ashley Blaine Featherson from the Netflix Original ‘Dear White People,’ plays his love interest. The song featuring vocals from Jacquees, was originally released on Wale’s ‘It's Complicated’ EP back in March and the video was worth the wait.

A tribute to the black struggle and a nod to the brilliance of black women, the beautifully constructed video directed by Yasha Gubren transports us through the story of Bonnie (Ashley) and Clyde (Wale) in different eras. The visuals showcase the pair mobilising during the uprising of the Black Panther movement, Wale on a throne besides an ancient African queen represented by Ashley and we even get some early 2000’s reminiscence, with similar scenes from Nelly's 'Dilemma' featuring Kelly Rowland.

The video starts with the words “besides every good man, is a great woman” and Wale goes on to rap, “I know we not felons but I definitely see you as my best friend, confident, and co-defender.” The video is politically charged and Wale’s poetic rhythm is complementary. Not only do the visuals depict the realities of black lives but also celebrates the on going support, black women have had for their communities and culture.
