Xander Zhou Spring/Summer 2019 Menswear

I couldn’t talk about LFWM without including the biggest eyebrow raiser show of the season. The show that has sparked major controversy for the last few days… three words for you. NEW WORLD BABY.

Chinese designer Xander Zhou, has done a dab hand at being at the forefront of a new wave of young Chinese designers, formulating a new aesthetic in menswear. Being from a culture that embraces this exceedingly technological era, it’s no surprise that here, he presents an ideology of the state of future humanity.

Zhou sent a number of male models down the runway with prosthetic baby bumps, with one model wearing a t-shirt with a line written “New World Baby.” The use of white contact lenses, space concept accessories and a model with a haircut reminiscent to Spock from Star Trek, further supports a theme similar to his previous collections which explores a universe where humans and even aliens could coexist in homogeneity and gender-fluidity.

Following the show, the brand stated on Instagram that they ”we're prepared to welcome a future of male pregnancy.” Although the whole idea may be mind-boggling to many and at the very least, thought-provoking (for everybody), you’ve got to admit it. The designers’ got some balls.
