A-COLD-WALL* Spring / Summer 2019 Menswear
26-year old LVMH Prize nominee Samuel Ross is the designer behind the pioneering brand, A-COLD-WALL*. His latest SS19 collection is an expression of youth culture and hegemonic disparity coming together. The Old Truman Brewery (where the show took place) was turned into an eerie dystopian-like atmosphere and guests were even asked to wear goggles and earplugs for the immersive experience.
So, what do you get when you combine reimagined urban streetwear, sportswear and contemporary design? The result – dramatic, unpredictable hemlines, a considerable amount of latex and a wanting to see more. Oh, and not to forget, the distinctive detachable components. There’s so much to sink your teeth into; an aesthetic made stronger by the quality of male and female models killing it on the runway. Most impressive is the myriad of contrastive materials used such as rubber and nylon, which were predominantly sourced in Europe.
Born in Brixton to Caribbean parents, Ross stated, “fashion didn’t seem like a viable option when I was growing up.” Instead he chose to study graphic design at DeMontford University in Leicester. It was after graduation that his journey really began. It’s great to see how imperative he believes eco-friendly and sustainable growth is. A positive step in the direction towards sustainability in the fashion industry, kudos to Ross.
