Jozem - Youth [Video]
Jozem has released his second single of the year ahead of his sophomore project dropping soon. Following on from the soothing wistfulness of ‘Goderich’, ‘Youth’ features Jozem’s self-produced Lo-fi, neo-soul and R&B fusion. His lyrical dexterity and willingness to show vulnerability in his music makes his work particularly enchanting.
“’Youth’ is about walking in one’s own truth, a celebration of being different, of marching to the beat of your own drum in a world that oftentimes will not acknowledge or understand you,” shares Jozem giving insight into the track.
In the accompanying visuals shot in Kenya where Jozem grew up, we see this sense of liberty displayed through movement and dance in a sequence that he had created in a dream. Inspired by the children attending a ballet school located in a slum in Kibera, Jozem saw their perseverance and motivation to overcome their circumstances to embrace a new art form:
“It resonated strongly with me, that feeling of being different but learning to march in my own truth,” he shares. “I immediately knew that I wanted to have some of the dancers from the school featured in the video. The actors/dancers in the ‘Youth’ video are graduates from this ballet school and the video is a homage to the kindred spirits we’ve lost along the way, those who taught us and allowed us to be ourselves in a world that did not understand us.”
