Sola - Feels Like A War [Video]
It can’t be easy for an artist so inspired by well-established genres, to take that inspiration and use it to create a completely unique and authentic sound, yet artist and producer Sola does it with ease. Her latest release, ‘Feels Like War’, hears her blend timeless R&B and jazz styles, drawing upon the work of musical legends such as Sade and Nina Simone, amongst electronic soundscapes.
This track adopts doo-wop cues and a multi-layered production which forms a lush base for Sola’s rich spirited vocals that carry a graceful poise and perception. Providing a rousing lift is Ife Ogunjobi (from the Jazz band Ezra Collective) on trumpet, that soars amongst the nostalgic feel of the sound with Sola’s self-proclaimed ‘warped soul’ giving a modern touch. It delves into the raw experiences when we do our best to overcome anxiety and are strong enough to embrace our flaws. In a statement about the track Sola shared:
“Lyrically, I'm singing to myself about reclaiming my mind from anxiety and depression. I find it easy to be held captive by my thoughts and learning to love my flaws can feel like a constant battle or war. This song is about overcoming, but also embracing them."
The accompanying video directed by Destine Paige embraces the reflective stance in the song with retro cinematography, but is still rife with futuristic attributes and details. Having created her last EP, Mami Wata, almost completely alone in her bedroom during lockdown, Sola demonstrates an impeccable artistry that is set to continue rising.
