Genesis Owusu - The Fall [Video]
New single ‘The Fall’ from Genesis Owusu arrived last week, heralding the arrival of a new five-track accompaniment to his debut album ‘Smiling With No Teeth’. The five track deluxe add on is titled ‘Missing Molars’.
The track is expertly claustrophobic with discordant synth sounds over a pulsing beat. The chorus chanting, “off my mind, off my mind, get your hands off of my mind,” matches the dark and defiant atmosphere of the music perfectly, and the visuals underline the isolating pressures of a struggling artist. The Ghanaian-Australian artist gives an expert vocal performance to convey the tension, using breathiness and distortion across several octaves, heightening the menacing effect of conflicting messages and persona.
With striking visuals of Owusu alternately being surrounded by press microphones and pulled from the stage by rope, or with legs bound and blindfolded while on display in an art gallery, the lyric, “I can’t feel ok, the fall might come today,” feels especially heart-breaking.
