Kay Young - White Teeth [Video]
New single from South London’s Kay Young sees her use sobering imagery to depict her own experiences of racial inequality. Following on from her neo-soul sound, ‘White Teeth’ uses a laid back melody with scattered keyboard and hazy trumpet to perfectly contrast the tracks’ important theme.
A rapper, producer and singer, Kay is a multifaceted artist who has finely honed her skills in combining her up-lifting sound with themes that stem from her lived experiences. On the track she can be heard reassuring her parents that defiance and self-belief were instilled within her mind from a young age. The conversational manner gives the song a touching and heart-felt feel, encouraging the listener to engage and reflect upon the lyrics and experiences of someone else.
“You ain’t got to worry about me // Look Daddy, I’ll be ok // What’s not to like about me // All I heard growing up // Got to work twice harder than your average // I’ve got superpowers Daddy.”
