Kwaku Asante - Angel [Video]
Emerging neo-soul artist Kwaku Asante offers new single ‘Angel’, selected from the forthcoming EP ‘ODE’ due for release on June 25.
The track is the first single from Asante of 2021, following 2020’s ‘4 Free’ (though Asante did release a Lagoon Sessions version of the single earlier this year). Lulling and delivered with loving honesty, ‘Angel’ is a gentle and calming listen. The London artist’s rich vocals are well suited to express the deep emotion building behind the scenes, hidden by the warm mood conveyed in the uplifting melody that puts listeners at ease. Romantic and intimate visuals, produced and directed by Kemi Anna and Lare A, enhance the loving feel of the song, giving us a window into moments shared between Asante and the song’s subject.
But as Asante explains, things aren’t quite what they seem: “‘Angel’ is about how selfish I am leading to neglecting a partner, not because I don’t care about them but because I want to be successful in music. The toxicity in the song is that I hoped that she would stay around, regardless of my actions and carry on being my shoulder to cry on, the person I vent to. It’s ironic, given the song sounds positive.”
