Psykhi - White Picket Fence [Video]
Introducing Psykhi, the grunge, punk loving artist with his debut track, ‘White Picket Fence’, a tantalising glimpse of the artist’s upcoming debut EP.
The 21-year-old emerging artist boasts an eclectic blend of influences, notably mixing the head-bashing rock of his favourite artists, including Jimi Hendrix, Siouxsie and the Banshees and Nirvana, with a sound much closer to his Ghanaian roots, African highlife. After spending his student loan on recording studios and a handful of demos, the young singer found his way to Globe Town Records. Out now, Psykhi’s debut single ‘White Picket Fence’ sees the artist embrace his rockier side, letting loose introspective and angsty lyrics over crashing guitars that clash nicely with the artists own smooth, mellow tones. In his lyrics, he slides between idealistic thoughts of romance and more disappointing realities in the blink of an eye, dropping lines like, “Wish I could see what’s behind those eyes / We’ll make a home / White picket fence.” The emotional depth that Psykhi craftily sneaks in beneath the enjoyable noise of pop-rock sonics should not be underestimated.
Speaking on his first track Psykhi explains, "I was trying to figure things out and needed my outlet; so I sat in the park with a blunt and wrote White Picket Fence. I write melodies to try and recreate a sense of euphoria. White Picket Fence is an expression of love and passion mingled with disappointment and pain."
The captivating visuals, created in collaboration with Nigerian artist and filmmaker Peter Spanjer, give us further insight into the mind of this exciting up-and-coming artist.
"When coming up with the concept for the White Picket Fence video, it was really important for me to visually mirror the intonation of the song whilst at the same time adding another layer to the experience,” Spanjer explains. “That's when I started to think about symbolism, such as the white horse - traditionally a symbol of freedom and triumph - then placing it within an environment you wouldn't typically see it in. The idea of the scenery was also inspired by the works of photographers Deana Lawson and Kennedi Carter who have both documented black cowboys - their images really resonated with me and represented all of the things I not only get from the song but also from Psykhi: confidence, courage and strength."
