Teyana Taylor - Still [Video]
Teyana Taylor pays tribute to the victims who have lost their lives to police brutality in the US with a powerful video to accompany ‘Still’, a song from Teyana’s game-changing LP, ‘The Album’.
The video for ‘Still’ begins with archive footage depicting Malcolm X addressing police brutality in a rousing speech. This is followed by a series of names flashing up on the screen: Emmet Till, Rodney King, Amadou Diallo, Trayvon Martin, Rumain Brisbon, Eric Garner, Michael Brown and many, many more before finally ending on George Floyd. These are the names of the many lives that have recently been lost at the hands of the police.
Mixing her own visuals with recent and historical clips of police brutality, racism and protests, Teyana refuses to hold back from hitting her message home, portraying herself as Breonna Taylor, Trayvon Martin, Elijah McClain and George Floyd and also, bringing to life notable figures such as Black Panther co-founder Huey Newton and civil rights activist Malcolm X. It’s a bold and deeply moving visual that features some upsetting footage and audio, including moments from George Floyd’s arrest.
In a recent Instagram post about the release, Teyana stated: "We are STILL emotional. We STILL keep fighting for love, justice. Yet we STILL keep losing our beautiful black lives. Where's our healing?"
