Nicki Knightz - For The Uninformed [EP]
Hackney based rapper Nicki Knightz presents us with her second EP ‘For The Uninformed,’ giving listeners a short but specific insight into particular struggles and vulnerabilities she’s faced growing up as a biracial woman. The new project follows on from the rapper’s debut EP ‘Hate,’ released in 2018.
Produced by Henny Knightz ‘For The Uninformed’ is a three track offering of personal commentary, laced over an experimental mix of hip hop, live instrumentation, avant garde samples and classic 808s. Storytelling on the neglected identity issues of being biracial, Nicki hones in on her experiences living between two very different cultures.
The EP opens with ‘Blacker the Berry’ which honours the inheritance of her Nigerian father’s work ethic, whilst also highlighting the foundations laid to ensure survival for a person of colour.
‘India Arie’ sees Nicki retelling the struggles faced by both herself and her parents, when it came to dealing with her hair. Documenting the many hair phases a lot of women experience from unmanageable to chemically processed and then the big chop. The EP comes to a close with ‘1964 Howlett Drive,’ featuring intensely lengthly instrumental sections, combined with sincere dialogue as Nicki shares memories of her Mother’s culture and it’s contrast to everyday life living in Hackney.
