Watch R&B newcomer RENÉ’s mesmerising live performance of ‘Unchartered Waters’.

The London raised Creole-Mauritian singer may only have a small selection of singles to her name for the moment, but following a short break away from new releases, RENÉ has returned to make her mark. Influenced by her love of hip-hop, R&B, soul and inspired by artists such as Aaliyah and Timbaland, she melds these tight-knit genres to weave her own contemporary sound. Following her first single of 2020 - the trappy ‘Space in Between’ - RENÉ’s stripped back performance of new song ‘Unchartered Waters’ presents us with the artist’s pure vocal ability, calming stage presence and strong sense of style, the latter which come as no surprise, given her ties to the fashion industry. In her view, the DIY aesthetic of the visual mirrors the rawness of the song.

“‘Uncharted Waters’ are the words of an empath who has fallen into playing the role of the ‘fixer,’” RENÉ explains. “It’s the point at which you need to remove yourself from a situation for the good of all involved or at the very least to safeguard your own mental health and wellbeing.”

She continues: “I wrote this three years ago from personal experience - feeling depleted and emotionally exhausted - but it’s taken on a whole new meaning with everything we’ve had to endure this year. In some ways we should all be able to relate and sympathise with each other that little bit more and yet many feel more alone than ever - forced into isolation and to acknowledge our inner demons that only we as individuals can conquer for ourselves.”
