Mick Jenkins - Consensual Seduction [Video]
Remember the old Snoop Dogg banger ‘Sensual Seduction’ from 2007? Meet it’s woke 2019 update from Chicagoan, Mick Jenkins featuring enhancing vocals from Corinne Bailey Rae.
A relatively slept-on rapper, Jenkins takes us to the islands of Portland, Jamaica on this smooth ode to a mutually decided sexual encounter. Despite the nifty play on words, this is no #MeToo gimmick - if you can keep up with his rapid wordplay, you’ll find plenty of positive understanding that counteracts the usual misogyny expected from hip-hop.
For me, the last verse is somewhat jarring; minimising men back to no more than primal instinct however, the track at least makes a play for ‘conscious’ rap, acknowledging the need for, as the rapper says, getting “more into a space of trying to be understanding first.” We’ve a long way to go but Jenkins makes a commercially-palatable start.
