Winona Oak - Don't Save Me [Video]
Having collaborated with euphoria-chasers The Chainsmokers, Swedish singer-songwriter Winona Oak dials things down for ‘Don’t Save Me,’ a cover of Haim’s 2012 hit.
Rather than straightforward pastiche, Oak’s voice and arrangement turns the previously upbeat hit into something desperate and longing – instead of a rallying independence cry, it becomes an abandonment wish, a romanticisation of melancholy that recalls the likes of Lana Del Rey or Banks. A testament to her talents, the new arrangement doesn’t take away any of the songs driving pace, building to a crescendo that could soundtrack the inciting incident of a coming-of-age movie. Old school glamour in new-school clothing, it’s perfect emo-pop for a new generation.
