Jorja Smith - On Your Own [Video]
Scrapbooks come to life as Jorja Smith returns, to drop retro visuals for ‘On Your Own,’ which features on the British singer’s debut album ‘Lost & Found.’
As always, Jorja is graceful in her tone as ‘On Your Own’ dwells on the ending of a rough relationship. However, the imaginative ‘retro but modern’ cinematography accompanying the song is what shapes it to life. Directed by Rashid Babiker, the video explores a cinematic scrapbook entitled Jorja Smith in which polaroid’s and illustrations highlighting Jorja’s journey and successes, come to life. Babiker’s reimagining of print media via his fusion of old and new, is done very exquisitely.
In a recent press release Babiker spoke about his inspiration behind the video, “I channelled imagined-nostalgia from the perspective of a girl, a fan of Jorja, who’s living in an intentionally anachronistic world where these video books exist and cassettes are the new.” Jorja’s fan is played by emerging actress Savannah Acquah Storey.
Jorja Smith is currently getting ready for her album entitled UK tour, kicking off in Norwich next month (Oct 4th), then crossing the pond for North America. ‘Lost & Found’ was also shortlisted for Album of the Year in the Hyundai Mercury Prize Awards, which Wolf Alice took the win for with ‘A Vision of Life,’ yesterday evening.
