Idris Elba's debut feature film 'YARDIE' in cinema's next week!
Idris Elba makes a dynamic directorial debut with his first feature film ‘Yardie,’ which is split between 1970s Kingston, Jamaica and 1980s London, England. Starring Aml Ameen, Yardie is a story of authenticity in both setting and performance, which draws the viewer into a story of crime, guilt and passion.
Ameen plays Dee, a young boy taken under the wing of Kingston drug lord King Fox, following the film’s opening dramatic events. Running drugs for Fox’s empire eventually leads him to London, where he reunites with his childhood girlfriend Yvonne (played brilliantly by newcomer actress Shantol Jackson) and their daughter, who had moved there in hope of a better life. Dee’s arrival in 1983’s London, gives viewers a smooth sense of place; punks, reggae sound clashes and drug wars in East and North London.
Sticks, played by Calvin Demba (Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Youngers) is another stand-out, playing a local musician who befriends Dee. The plot, drugs and revenge in both London and Jamaica, doesn’t exactly scream originality – but Elba’s direction and the on-screen chemistry of the cast, keeps the film energetic. Highly enjoyable and definitely worth the watch when it hit's UK cinema's next week Friday 31st August 2018.
