Raja Kumari - Shook [Video]
After a six-month hiatus, Grammy-nominated songwriter, singer and rapper Raja Kumari dropped the video for her single ‘Shook,’ perfectly reintroducing us to what she’s about, bindi’s and grills.
Directed by Gil Green and shot around a car garage in Miami, the single opens with a Swahili chant leading up to a beat that reminisces Missy Elliott's glory days. Kumari struts around in various fashion pieces, from a neon jumpsuit to a grey sari draped over army wear. Kumari can give you thought provoking lyrics like in her single ‘Meera’ or she can give you sassy and flamboyant, like she does in ‘Shook,’ proving her versatility as an artist. She raps, “bitch I chin check, every syllable for the street, yeah the world blind, but my third eye see the heat.”
Kumari’s usual sound incorporates classical Indian tropes with Californian driven Hip-Hop beats, having a mass appeal to a predominantly South Asian fan base. However, Kumari is said to have stated that ‘Shook’ was actually made with everybody in mind, not just the diaspora. This new direction on her sound means Kumari is ready to take her music to a global scale and if you ask me, the mainstream can do with some brown excellence.
‘Shook’ is taken from Kumari’s upcoming album ‘Blood Line’ due for release in early 2019. Stream ‘Shook’ now and watch the video below.
