Recent years has seen the birth and growth of afro-swing; a smooth blend of afrobeats, pop and dancehall coming together to form a sound that we didn’t stop hearing throughout 2018. The emerging genre spawned a number of hits, and brought to our attention a number of new artists – one of them being ZieZie.

Only 20 years old, ZieZie sold over 200,000 records with his debut track ‘Fine Girl,’ released earlier this year. Determined to close the year out with just as much style, he releases the follow-up single ‘Sensei’ along with accompanying visuals. The Chris Chuky directed video plays on the song’s title, taking inspiration from martial arts films such as Enter The Dragon, Crouching Tiger and a stylistic nod to cult-classic Kill Bill.

The track effortlessly fuses Afrobeats and pop, in true afro-swing fashion. ZieZie’s Congolese heritage proudly comes out in his lyrics, as he sings in French, as well as English. The Croydon native’s smooth vocal is complimented by a slick visual, showcasing ZieZie’s playful side and director Chuky’s innovation. The result, a fun visual, notably different to the majority of music videos that currently populate the UK urban music scene.

Having spent 2018 working with the likes of Krept & Konan, as well as renowned producers iLL-Blu and Diplo, ZieZie is definitely one to look out for in 2019. Currently signed to Sony RCA and if new track ‘Sensei’ is anything to go by, we should be in for a treat.
